What is Body Voice Work?

Body Voice work is a somatic approach to activating the whole body as a resource for making sound.

In these classes we learn to take time to practice and understand the relationships between the breath, the moving body, the voice and imagination. It provides a Mindful awareness of the voice as a physical process. Singing regulates. sustains and deepens the breath which helps to develop the internal sensing body, it increases hearing processes and focuses the body into a place of balance.

My Body-Voice practice is a creative  practice which has been distilled over years of performance training and practice. It is rooted in my training in acting, voice and speech, breath work, contemporary and traditional movement practices. I have done practical research into traditional song, psycho-physical and spiritual practices relating to voice and have been teaching voice work for 20 years.

Working with the voice through the moving body helps to create a sense of ease and confidence in producing voice, speech and song because you will learn to identify the feeling of how you are making the sound.

There is a palpable sensation of grounding, awareness and a good strong and positive energy generated through these body-voice classes.

I generally recommend a block of 6 sessions to begin to get a feeling of how the practice works.

Body-voice is suitable for anyone who wants to learn to sing or use the voice to express themselves more confidently.

In my experience people tend to judge their natural sound, which is made in the past, and use that judgement as an obstacle to connecting with and accepting the real voice happening in the present tense.

My practice is rooted in a firm belief that everyone can sing, and that it is a matter of being present, feeling connected and clear about your sound and accepting this as a starting point for learning.

Whether you are a beginner, perhaps one who has been told that they can’t sing, an experienced singer, or somewhere in between, a short series of body voice sessions will help you connect more actively with your breath and body, the seat of your voice and creativity.

Individual body voice sessions are one hour long and there is a good concession price for artists, low income families and single mothers. It is possible to do this work in pairs and is sometimes more effective depending on the client. I generally recommended that clients initially book a short series of six sessions to give time and space for the work to take effect.
